Cart Frame

Laying out and bolting up the frame.

Well, a significant amount of time has passed since I posted about the cart build. Many things, including “life” simply got in the way of consistently building (and as a result posting photos of) the cart. The work picked up on Sunday January 16, 2024. In this work session, we concentrated on getting the cart’s underside/base built. It was at this point that when we realized that even though I had tools, it took “the proper tools.” Alabama Devil Dawgs, LLC, now owns a metric wrench set.

Working on removing the dust caps.

The company is also the proud owner of a new grease gun. The packaging for the trailer never mentioned that I would need a grease gun to grease the wheels, but, apparently, the wheel hubs only come “partially greased.” The next photo is an action shot of my dear friend Windle, who is diligently working to get the darn dust cap off of one of the wheel hubs. Windle is the one who so graciously offered up his garage for us to build the cart in. After a full fifteen minutes of wrestling with the dust caps we finally got them off. After finally getting the dust caps off, I found that there was only a little grease where there should have been quite a bit more.

Not as much grease as needed.

After putting the washer and the hub back together, it was time to thread the assembly onto the axle. With all of the grease in the hub, I would have thought that it would have just slid right on but actually, it had to be finessed quite a bit before I could actually get it to slide onto the axle. I wiggled and wiggled it, held my tongue just right, and then, I must have gotten it into the perfect position because it just slipped on easily.

The hub finally installed.

The last picture shows the hub finally in place. Now it was just a matter of getting the other hub assembly onto the axle. While it went a little faster than the first one because I knew how it was supposed to go on, but it still took some significant effort. See the next installment, “Actual Cart Build Part 3” to see how the trailer portion of the build came out.🌭
