At this point, I had enough materials to get stated, but it looked like it was going to be a huge challenge. I was following the “EZ-Built Hot Dog Cart” plans and I was watching the videos 2 or 3 videos ahead of where I actually was in the build process so I would have an idea of what was coming. next. By doing that, I was able to make a major change as I was building.

As You can see from the next picture, the plans called for the frame to be exclusively built out of 2″ x 2″ strips. The plans called for the top 2 members be cut 6″ longer than the bottom members to make “handles” for maneuvering the cart. I was thinking that handles should be round not square for the shear comfort factor. I figured that I’d be using it for years to come so I might as well build it the way I wanted it.

Round Handles

Round handles, that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

So I got to wondering how I could cut the handles to be round. Sanding them would just take forever, so I decided to search out a wood shop to see if they could put the top 2 strips on a lathe to turn them so the ends would be round. Easy peasy, right? Wrong. As it turns out most wood shop lathes are only a couple of feet long and my pieces were 4½ feet long. It appeared that I was just going to have to deal with square handles. The last place I went was the woodworking/cabinet shop that was featured on the HGTV show Hometown Takeover. The fella there was really nice. He said that he couldn’t help me. After I thanked him and was walking to my truck, he stuck his head out the door and said “Hey…why couldn’t you use wheel barrow handles?” There was my answer. I thanked him and immediately jumped into the truck and off to Lowe’s I went. Lowe’s, of course, didn’t have them, so I ended up getting them from Home Depot. Now its on to the next step.🌭
